How will the characteristics of our Gen Z learners depicted in the Meet GenZ video define their engagement in the traditional classroom snippet?
It clearly depicts the characteristics of Gen Z students being obviously disengaged in the tradition lecture/ learning classroom. I believe that this is a direct result of current technology which includes shortened high speed videos and information displayed in concise dot point fashion with viral music in which Gen Z consumes daily. As a result, Gen Z feels inclined to be disinterested and disrespect the traditional values of learning inside a classroom as they view it as time wasting and unnecessary.
Referring to the ideas presented by Willis and Robinson, is this level of creativity in evidence in the schools you have attended, both as a student, and as a preservice teacher? Furthermore, is this level of creativity in evidence in your University units? As secondary pre-service teaching students, you will experience a variety of approaches to teaching, learning and course design in your discipline studies. Why were your previous studies presented in that particular way? How could they have been presented?
I do not believe that this level of creativity is evident in schools I have attended as a student or a preservice teacher. I believe that this is due to the generation of the current teachers, as well as how quickly technology has evolved around this generation of teachers. However, I believe to some degree that this level of creativity is visible among past university units. I find that those units that were creative and innovative stood out to me much more. I believe this is due to some university lecturers being more up to date with technology than other, therefore, allowing their units to be presented more unique and creatively. From my experience as a pre-service secondary teacher I came across many learning studies that were presented in a rather outdated way. From this experience, I can conclude that more use of ICT's would have been highly beneficial within the discipline of Health and Physical Education.
What do you think the implications are of a curriculum that is linear, progressive, aimed at a single learning outcome for the development of both individuals and the society we live in?
I believe a linear and progressive curriculum is essential in schooling. I believe that this allows students to gain confidence and knowledge as they progress through a unit to work toward an end goal. I also believe that when a curriculum is linear it is much easier for a student to grasp the concepts of the unit and absorb the larger picture. I also subscribe to the idea that if all schooling was unified and working toward the same outcome at the same time, us as an educational whole or society will be much more seamless and coherent.
How can ICTs help you in the development of a professional learning network? How are you feeling about this?
ICT's are a now essential tools which allow me to develop and expand my professional learning network rapidly. At the time of typing this I am currently looking around at my screen full of tabs which include reading lists, assessment summaries as well as a university support tab. This allows me to feel in touch with my units and supported by the university.
